Cluj's Botanical Garden is said to be the largest in southeastern
Europe covering over 14 hectares (35 acres) and counting over 10.000 species of plants.
We visited on a hot summer day and we couldn't have found a more charming place in Cluj
to take shelter from the sun. A place of calm and beauty - and shade :) - amid the bustle
of the city. The hilly grounds covered with trees are the perfect spot for a walk and
judging by the number of people holding hands also the perfect spot for a romantic stroll.
The garden feature a Botanical Museum and herbarium, a rose garden and a small Japanese
garden. The greenhouses display tropical plants including huge Amazon waterlilies.
There is also a section devoted to desert plants. Romanian flora is well represented.
The garden was founded in 1920 by professor Alexandru Borza and it still is part of the
university's Botanical Institute.
